What you get

A database you do not have to look after.

  • Connection string included

    DATABASE_URL is set for you. Any service in the same environment can use it with a reference like ${{db.DATABASE_URL}}.

  • Backups to your own bucket

    Turn on backups and a full backup is taken every day, with the changes in between kept so you can go back to any moment. You choose how long they are kept.

  • Restores that are safe to try

    A restore creates a new database. The original is not touched, so you can check the copy before you switch your app to it.

  • Databases and users

    Add more databases and users from the console, including users with replication rights for change-data-capture tools.

  • Settings you can change

    Timeouts, memory per query, autovacuum and parallel queries are all in the console. Most changes do not need a restart.

  • Stop it when idle

    Stop the database and vCPU and memory stop billing. Your data stays where it is.

How it works

Add a database in three steps.

  1. Create it

    Choose a name and how much storage it needs. It is ready in a couple of minutes.

  2. Connect your app

    Add DATABASE_URL to your service as a reference, so you never paste the password anywhere.

  3. Turn on backups

    Pick a bucket and a retention period. From then on you can restore to a backup or to a point in time.

The connection goes over your environment's private network, not the internet.

Billed like any other service.

A database costs the same vCPU, memory and disk rates as your own containers. There is no extra charge for it being managed.

Estimate your cost
  • Stopping the database stops vCPU and memory billing. Disk keeps billing until you delete it.
  • Storage can be increased while the database runs. It cannot be made smaller.

Common questions

Can people reach it from the internet?
No. It is only reachable from services in the same environment, over the private network.
What happens when I rotate the password?
A new password is made and DATABASE_URL is updated. Redeploy the services that use it so they pick up the new one.
How far back can I restore?
As far back as your retention setting keeps. The console shows the earliest point you can restore to.
Can I add read replicas?
Yes. Create a Postgres service as a replica of an existing one to spread out read traffic.
